Copper Supplement

Should you be taking a copper supplement? It's a fair question — copper is an essential mineral, and supplement aisles are happy to sell you almost anything. But the honest answer for most people is simpler (and cheaper) than a pill. Here's what to know.

Copper is essential — but you need very little

Copper is a trace mineral: your body uses it in enzymes involved in energy production, iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and normal nervous system function. The key word is trace — the recommended dietary allowance for adults is about 900 micrograms a day, which is less than a thousandth of a gram.

Most people don't need a supplement

According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, most people get enough copper from a normal, varied diet. Everyday foods rich in copper include shellfish, nuts and seeds, beans and lentils, whole grains, potatoes, mushrooms, and dark chocolate. True copper deficiency is uncommon and usually tied to specific medical circumstances — and it's diagnosed with a blood test, not a hunch.

When a supplement might come up — and why it's a doctor conversation

There are situations where a clinician may recommend copper supplementation, but that's exactly the point: it's their call, based on your history and labs. Copper is a mineral where more is genuinely not better — excess copper is harmful, and supplements can interact with other nutrients like zinc. If you suspect a deficiency or you're considering any mineral supplement, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian first. Please don't start supplementing based on a blog post — including ours.

Where does a copper bottle fit in?

Not as a supplement — let's be clear about that. Water rested in a copper vessel picks up only trace amounts of the metal, and we don't sell our bottles as a source of nutrition or a way to prevent illness. What a good bottle is great for, especially when you travel: having water with you everywhere, skipping single-use plastic in airports, and keeping the healthy habit you have at home going on the road. The ritual, the durability, and the reminder to hydrate — that's the real value, at 30,000 feet or at your desk.
