Why are Moscow Mules Served in Copper?
Ginger beer, vodka, fresh lime — and always, always that gleaming copper mug. The Moscow mule is one of the few cocktails where the vessel is as iconic as the recipe. But why copper? The real story is part science, part history, and part brilliant marketing.
A little history: the drink that saved two struggling brands
The classic story dates to 1940s Los Angeles, where the Moscow mule was born at the Cock 'n Bull pub on Sunset Boulevard — the meeting of a vodka brand that Americans weren't drinking yet, a house-made ginger beer that wasn't selling, and (as legend has it) a stock of copper mugs that needed a purpose. Served in that distinctive cup, the drink became a sensation, helped launch vodka in America, and permanently married one cocktail to one vessel.
Why the copper mug actually works
- It feels icy — instantly. Copper is an excellent thermal conductor, so the mug takes on the temperature of the drink the moment the ice hits. That frosty handle-and-rim sensation is a real, physical part of the mule experience that glass can't quite match.
- The frost factor. A chilled copper mug frosts up beautifully, keeping the drink feeling colder sip after sip.
- The presentation. There's no mistaking a mule crossing the bar. The copper glow against the lime and mint is half the appeal — it's a drink you order partly with your eyes.
- The ritual. Cocktails are about tradition, and eighty-plus years of copper mugs is a tradition worth keeping.
One practical note: use a lined mug for cocktails
Here's a detail many mule fans don't know: acidic drinks — and a lime-and-ginger-beer cocktail qualifies — shouldn't sit against bare copper. That's why quality Moscow mule mugs are lined with nickel or stainless steel on the inside. Copper outside for the look and feel, lining inside for the drink. (Unlined copper vessels, like traditional water bottles, are for plain water.)
Caring for copper mugs
Hand wash with mild soap and a soft sponge — no harsh scouring pads, no dishwasher. If the shine dulls over time, a quick rub with lemon and salt brings it right back.
