Is Water Good for You?

Drinking Water Can Help the Body Burn More Calories

Plenty of studies have looked at the effect of drinking one, 0.5 liters serving of water.

Drinking water increases the amount of calories you burn, in adults, the rate at which you burn calories is shown to increase by 24–30%  10 minutes after drinking water. This effect can last for about 60 minutes.

One study showed that when overweight and obese women and children increased their water intake to about one liter a day, without any other change in lifestyle, they lost 2kg of weight after a 12 month period.

This study shows that drinking 0.5 liters of water will enable you to burn 23 calories, if you calculate that on a yearly term you have 2 kg or 4.4 pounds of fat or 17,000 calories a year, very impressive. Just by upping your water intake alone.

In some other studies individuals increased their water intake to 1.5 liters a day and over the course of a few weeks, there were remarkable changes in body weight, waist size, body mass index and other parameters. These effects were more pronounced when the water they drank was cold. This is due to the fact that your body burns calories just to warm up the water.

Drinking Water Before Meals Can Reduce Appetite

Drinking water before a meal has been said to reduce appetite.. This claim is very true, more so in middle aged or much older adults.

Studies have shown that when older adults drink water before a meal, they will lose 2 kg or 4.4 pounds of weight after a 12 week period.

Another study indicated that when some overweight middle aged adults drank water before any meal, they lost 44% more weight than another group who did nothing. In another study ,individuals that drank water before breakfast consumed less calories by about 13%. If you put you your water bottle in the fridge overnight, by the time you wake up in the morning, you’ll have great alkaline water ready for you to drink before breakfast! Give it a try to take advantage of that potential 13%!

Drinking More Water is Is a Simple way to Reduce your Calorie Intake

Due to the fact that water contains no calories, increased intake will lead to consumption of fewer calories overall. This feature can enable you to lose weight as opposed to several beverages and drinks that are loaded with calories. Studies show that when you drink water, you reduce your calorie consumption by about 200 calories.

When you add one cup of water to your daily intake you reduce your long-term weight gain by about 0.13 kg. Also if you substitute water with all other beverages and sweetened drinks, that figure skyrockets. One of the reasons we came up with the concept for the Otiem copper water bottle, was to help keep water ice cold and refreshing all day so that people actually looked forward to the taste of their water, and eventually replaced their soda cravings.

This also applies to children as well, when they increase their water intake it reduces their chances of becoming obese.

A recent study aimed to reduce obesity rates by encouraging children to drink water. Water fountains were installed in 17 schools and provided classroom lessons about water consumption for 2nd and 3rd graders. After one school year, the risk of obesity had been reduced by  31% in the schools where water intake was increased.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

It has been said by many health experts that the average person should drink about eight glasses or 2 liters of water a day. One of the reasons we chose to make our water bottles 1 liter in size, was that we knew it would be easy to remember “all you had to do was drink two full bottles per day.”  However this figure is just a guideline and is subject to change, depending on the individual. For instance a person who exercises should consume more water than one who does not exercise. Older people and breast feeding mothers should watch the amount of water that they drink.

You should also note that, you get water from the different things you eat and drink during the day things like fruits, vegetables, coffee, and milk all contain water.

Due to all these factors, it is advisable to drink water when you are thirsty and always enough to relieve your thirst. Drinking more water can help with headaches, constant hunger and lack of focus as these symptoms usually stem from dehydration.

When trying to lose weight, your water intake should revolve around 1 to 2 liters a day.

Keep in mind also that too much water can even be bad for you and can lead to water toxicity. Strange right? But this is potentially dangerous and can lead to death in extremely rare cases.
